Where is The Villa Diodati located?

In West Vancouver, you can access Lord Byron's rented villa via ​The Silk Purse Arts Centre, at 1570 Argyle Ave, West Vancouver, BC V7V 1A1

 

In Victoria, a temporary portal to Geneva may be found at Craigdarroch Castle, 1050 Joan Crescent, Victoria, BC.

What is Immersive Theatre?

​

Immersive theatre places the audience inside the world of the story.

​

Rather than sitting at a distance, guests share the same space as the performers, becoming witnesses to events as they unfold around them. Characters may speak directly to audience members, ask questions, or offer a bite of something. Every performance feels immediate, personal, and alive. Guests will find themselves seated as voyeurs at a very unusual house party taking place in Geneva during a violent thunderstorm.

Mary Shelley Meets a Monster is designed to be welcoming to immersive theatre veterans and first-time audiences. Participation is always optional. If you prefer to simply sit back and observe, you'll still experience the complete story. If you'd like to engage more deeply, sit in the front row. Subtle opportunities for interaction arise naturally throughout the evening.

Unlike Dreamqueen's The Last Resort or Mr. Nowhere's Disappearing-Reappearing Starlight Carnival, however, Mary Shelley Meets a Monster is a scripted play in two acts rather than an immersive sandbox.

​

The performance takes place in an intimate Regency drawing room inspired by the historic Villa Diodati, where Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, Claire Clairmont, and Dr. Polidori gathered during the infamous "Year Without a Summer" in 1816.

​

No two performances will be exactly alike.

​

What are the rules at The Villa Diodati?

​

The performers may occasionally initiate brief, appropriate contact with front-row guests. Please do not initiate physical contact with performers.

Please don't speak during the performance. Laughter, gasps, and other vocal reactions are always welcome.

Don't wander during the show (only during preshow, intermission, and postshow portions).

Phones off. They didn't exist in 1816 and probably shouldn't exist now.

Don't fall in love with Lord Byron. Terrible idea.​

Any trigger warnings?​

​

The show is rated 16+ for language, sexual themes, and frequent erotic situations.

​

Is the show scary?

​​

There are elements of horror, ghost stories, readings from classic Gothic literature, a hallucinated apparition, and a great deal of thunder. The show aims for unease, wonder, and suspense rather than jump scares.
